Hello Everyone!

In this week’s newsletter, I am happy to share my book notes on Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza.

“If you want a new outcome, you will have to break the habit of being yourself, and reinvent a new self.”

💭 Personal Reflection

I’ve been interested in, and still am, in personal development.

Naturally, this book intrigued me as it is fairly popular in the space, and I finally decided to read it.

In this book, Dr. Joe Dispenza explains his model for personal change by borrowing concepts and using language from quantum physics, metaphysics, and neuroscience.

Written as a practical guide to Evolve Your Brain, this book introduces meditative techniques for losing your mind and creating a new one.

Whether you call it “quantum manifestation” or meditation.

You don’t need to understand quantum mechanics to experience personal change.

Dr. Joe Dispenza claims that…

“you can use your mind as the observer to collapse quantum particles and organize a vast number of sub-atomic waves of probability into a desired physical event called an experience in your life.”

He fails to mention that this is a metaphorical interpretation rather than a scientific interpretation of the double-slit experiment.

  • In quantum mechanics, the observer effect describes how measuring a subatomic particle (like an electron) can change its state from being a particle to a wave. This is called the wave-particle duality.

  • In social sciences, the equivalent concept of the observer effect is called the Hawthorne effect, where researchers found that workers' productivity increased when they were aware of being studied.

Dispenza's view and model for personal change is more aligned with what people call “the process of manifestation,” where…

  • Thoughts lead to feelings.

  • Feelings lead to actions.

  • And actions lead to results.

Lucky for you, you don’t need to understand quantum mechanics to start meditating or “manifesting.”

“In the Tibetan language, to meditate means “to become familiar with”… [and] to become familiar with anything, we have to spend some time observing it.”

By developing this simple habit, you can reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and decide whether they work for you or against you.

The book is divided into three sections and contains 370 pages.

  • Part I: The science of you.

  • Part II: Your brain and meditation.

  • Part III: Stepping toward your destiny.

Overall, this is a thought-provoking book that blends ideas from quantum physics, consciousness, and personal development.

It ponders how your consciousness and energy might interplay in creating reality by combining metaphors, philosophies, and speculative science (rather than established scientific fact).

Although I enjoyed reading the clever use of words, such as “emotions are energy in motion” or “go from the old model of cause and effect to causing an effect.”

I believe balancing this text with accurate interpretations of these concepts and scientific understanding is important aswell.

The biggest takeaway I got from this book is that…

I agree that most people live their lives stuck in habitual thought patterns that eventually go unnoticed, including myself.

As a result, these thoughts get attached to our identity.

Or like Joe Dispenza says…

“…Your same thoughts, actions and feelings will enslave you to the same reality.”

By aiming for a higher form of self and changing your personality, you can change your personal reality.

If you want to change your life, you must be greater than, not equal to, your current reality.

Hope this helps; until next time.

✍️ Favourite Quotes

  • “We meditate to enter the subconscious's operating system, where all those unwanted habits and behaviours reside, and change them to more productive modes to support us in our lives.”

  • “Accept the notion that once you change your internal state, you don't need the external world to provide you with reasons to feel joy, gratitude, appreciation, or any other elevated emotion.”

  • “We go through life wanting someone or something outside of ourselves to regulate our feelings. Instead, take control of the process by creating the feeling ahead of time and use that feeling to create the experience.”
